Why Vacation Rentals Changed How I Travel Forever

I used to be a hotel person. You know the type—someone whobooks the same chain properties, collects points religiously, and finds comfort in those little bottles of shampoo. Then my sister convinced me to try a rental home in Maine last summer, and I haven't looked back since.

The difference hit me the moment we walked through the door. Instead of a cramped room with two beds and a view of the parking lot, we had an entire cottage. A kitchen where we could make pancakes without paying thirty dollars for room service. A living room where the kids could sprawl out and play games while the adults actually talked. A porch. An actual porch where I drank my morning coffee and watched the sunrise over the water.

But here's what really sold me: the money we saved went toward experiences instead of overpriced accommodations. We took a sailing lesson. Went whale watching. Hit up that lobster shack everyone raves about—twice. When you're not dropping a fortune on multiple hotel rooms, your vacation budget suddenly stretches much further.

The best vacation rentals feel like you're staying at a friend's place, minus the awkwardness. Each one has personality. Character. That Maine cottage had a drawer full of board games, a bookshelf stocked with beach reads, and a binder with the owner's restaurant recommendations that proved absolutely spot-on.

Sure, hotels have their place. Sometimes you want that daily housekeeping and a concierge desk. But if you're traveling with family or friends, planning a longer stay, or just want to live like a local instead of a tourist, rentals offer something hotels simply can't match.

Now I find myself browsing listings even when I don't have a trip planned. Mountain cabins in Colorado. Historic brownstones in Boston. Beach bungalows in California. Each one is a potential adventure, a different way to experience a place.

That hotel loyalty program? I barely remember my account password anymore. And those little shampoo bottles? I don't miss them one bit.
